▲ What We Know So Far
Magnosaurus has never had a Mattel Jurassic World figure before. It is confirmed for the first wave of the Primal Ambush Frenzy Pack under product code JPG81, alongside Bagaceratops, Thescelosaurus and a repainted Minqaria. No packaging or figure images have appeared yet, so its colours and sculpt are still unknown. Judging by the Primal Ambush figures that have been shown, expect a stylised design with exaggerated features and bold colours rather than a strict museum reconstruction. We will update this page as soon as pictures are released.
🔬 Why This Species Is Worth Knowing
Magnosaurus is one of the oldest members of the great group of meat-eaters that later produced Allosaurus, T. rex and the birds. It lived around 170 million years ago, tens of millions of years before those famous names, at a time when large predatory dinosaurs were only beginning to spread across the world. For most of the last century it was lost in the “Megalosaurus wastebasket”, the habit of calling almost any big English meat-eater Megalosaurus, and only recent restudy has shown it to be a distinct animal.
Features & Articulation
✓ Frenzy Pack assortment✓ Product code JPG81? Jaw — to be confirmed? Arms and legs — to be confirmed? Tail — to be confirmed
Frenzy Pack is the basic assortment in Primal Ambush. In the previous line, Frenzy Pack figures were smaller dinosaurs with simple articulation, typically a moving jaw, legs and tail, and no electronics or button-activated feature. We expect the same here, but nothing is confirmed until the figure is shown. We will test every joint and add the results here.
Size & Specs
Magnosaurus ships in the first wave of the Frenzy Pack alongside Bagaceratops, Minqaria and Thescelosaurus. Mattel has not published measurements, so we will add the length and height, plus a size comparison with other small Mattel theropods, as soon as we can put a ruler to it.
Early Verdict — One to Watch?
On species choice alone, yes. British dinosaurs are having a good run in the Mattel line, and Magnosaurus is one of the most obscure yet, a name that rarely appears outside specialist books. It should sit well next to Megalosaurus, Eustreptospondylus and the other English theropods. Beyond that there is very little to judge yet: with no pictures released, the sculpt, colours and articulation are all unknown. This is not a review, and we will give a proper verdict once we have the figure.

About the Magnosaurus
Magnosaurus nethercombensis was a meat-eating theropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic of England, living about 170 million years ago. Its fossils were found at Nethercomb, near Sherborne in Dorset, in a rock unit called the Inferior Oolite. The German palaeontologist Friedrich von Huene first described the bones in 1923 as a species of Megalosaurus, then gave them their own genus, Magnosaurus, in 1932. The name simply means “large lizard”.
Despite the name it was not especially big. The only known skeleton, which may be from an animal that was not fully grown, suggests a predator about four metres long and weighing somewhere around 200 kilograms. It walked on two legs and had the sharp, blade-like teeth typical of its family.
Magnosaurus is known from parts of the lower jaws, vertebrae, hip bones and legs, so much about its appearance is still uncertain. A detailed restudy published in 2010 confirmed that it was a megalosauroid, a relative of Megalosaurus and Eustreptospondylus, and one of the oldest well-documented tetanurans, the group that includes most later meat-eating dinosaurs.
