▲ What We Know So Far

Thescelosaurus has never had a Mattel Jurassic World figure before. It is confirmed for the first wave of the Primal Ambush Frenzy Pack under product code JPG80, alongside Bagaceratops, Magnosaurus and a repainted Minqaria. No packaging or figure images have appeared yet, so its colours and sculpt are still unknown. Judging by the Primal Ambush figures that have been shown, expect a stylised design with exaggerated features and bold colours rather than a strict museum reconstruction. We will update this page as soon as pictures are released.

🔬 Why This Species Is Worth Knowing

Thescelosaurus was one of the very last dinosaurs, sharing its world with Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops right up to the asteroid impact. Its first skeleton sat unopened in a museum crate for more than twenty years before anyone studied it, which is why its species name is neglectus. A 2023 scan of its skull found large smell centres in the brain but a poor sense of hearing, a combination seen in animals that dig, so it may have spent part of its life in burrows.

Features & Articulation

✓ Frenzy Pack assortment✓ Product code JPG80? Jaw — to be confirmed? Arms and legs — to be confirmed? Tail — to be confirmed

Frenzy Pack is the basic assortment in Primal Ambush. In the previous line, Frenzy Pack figures were smaller dinosaurs with simple articulation, typically a moving jaw, legs and tail, and no electronics or button-activated feature. We expect the same here, but nothing is confirmed until the figure is shown. We will test every joint and add the results here.

Size & Specs

Thescelosaurus ships in the first wave of the Frenzy Pack alongside Bagaceratops, Magnosaurus and Minqaria. Mattel has not published measurements, so we will add the length and height, plus a size comparison with other small Mattel plant-eaters, as soon as we can put a ruler to it.

Early Verdict — One to Watch?

On species choice alone, yes. Small two-legged plant-eaters are badly under-represented in dinosaur toy lines, and Thescelosaurus is a well-known animal from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world. It is a natural companion for the many Mattel T. rex and Triceratops figures, since they all lived together. Beyond that there is very little to judge yet: with no pictures released, the sculpt, colours and articulation are all unknown. This is not a review, and we will give a proper verdict once we have the figure.

About the Thescelosaurus

Thescelosaurus neglectus was a small plant-eating ornithischian dinosaur from the very end of the Cretaceous in western North America, living from about 68 to 66 million years ago. Its fossils are found in the Hell Creek and Lance formations of the United States and in equivalent rocks in Canada. It was named in 1913 by Charles Gilmore of the Smithsonian. The genus name means “wondrous lizard”.

It was three to four metres long, most of that tail, and stood about waist-high to a person. It walked on two sturdy hind legs, had short arms with five-fingered hands, a long, low head ending in a narrow beak, and a stiffened tail. Its build suggests a strong, steady animal rather than a sprinter.

Thescelosaurus is best known to the public for a specimen nicknamed “Willo”, which was announced in 2000 as preserving a fossilised heart. Later studies concluded the lump was a mineral concretion, not an organ. More recent work on its brain and inner ear has turned out to be the more interesting story, pointing to an animal with a keen nose that may have dug for food or shelter.
