▲ What We Know So Far

Bagaceratops has never had a Mattel Jurassic World figure before. It is confirmed for the first wave of the Primal Ambush Frenzy Pack under product code JPG83, alongside Magnosaurus, Thescelosaurus and a repainted Minqaria. No packaging or figure images have appeared yet, so its colours and sculpt are still unknown. Judging by the Primal Ambush figures that have been shown, expect a stylised design with exaggerated features and bold colours rather than a strict museum reconstruction. We will update this page as soon as pictures are released.

🔬 Why This Species Is Worth Knowing

Bagaceratops is one of the few dinosaurs we can follow from hatchling to adult. Dozens of skulls have been found in the Gobi Desert, and the smallest are under five centimetres long, small enough to sit in the palm of your hand. Comparing them shows how the beak, the little nose horn and the short neck frill changed as the animal grew. It was a close relative of the famous Protoceratops, and a distant, much smaller cousin of Triceratops.

Features & Articulation

✓ Frenzy Pack assortment✓ Product code JPG83? Jaw — to be confirmed? Legs — to be confirmed? Tail — to be confirmed

Frenzy Pack is the basic assortment in Primal Ambush. In the previous line, Frenzy Pack figures were smaller dinosaurs with simple articulation, typically a moving jaw, legs and tail, and no electronics or button-activated feature. We expect the same here, but nothing is confirmed until the figure is shown. We will test every joint and add the results here.

Size & Specs

Bagaceratops ships in the first wave of the Frenzy Pack alongside Magnosaurus, Minqaria and Thescelosaurus. Mattel has not published measurements, so we will add the length and height, plus a size comparison with other small Mattel ceratopsians, as soon as we can put a ruler to it.

Early Verdict — One to Watch?

On species choice alone, yes. Small horned dinosaurs are thin on the ground in the Mattel range, and Bagaceratops is a deep cut that most toy lines would never touch. It should pair nicely with any Protoceratops already on your shelf. Beyond that there is very little to judge yet: with no pictures released, the sculpt, colours and articulation are all unknown. This is not a review, and we will give a proper verdict once we have the figure.

About the Bagaceratops

Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi was a small horned dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia, living a little over 70 million years ago. Its fossils come from the Barun Goyot Formation in the Gobi Desert. It was named in 1975 by the Polish palaeontologists Teresa Maryańska and Halszka Osmólska, following the Polish-Mongolian expeditions of the 1960s and 70s. The name combines the Mongolian word baga, meaning small, with the Greek for “horned face”.

It was only about a metre long and probably weighed around as much as a medium-sized dog. It walked on all fours, had a parrot-like beak for cropping tough plants, a small bump of a horn on its snout and a short, simple frill at the back of its skull, with none of the long brow horns of its giant relatives.

Bagaceratops belonged to the protoceratopsids, a family of small Asian ceratopsians that lived in dry, dune-filled landscapes. Because so many skulls of different ages have been found, it has become an important animal for studying how horned dinosaurs grew up.
