▲ What We Know So Far

Minqaria is not new to the Mattel range, but it is back. It is confirmed for the first wave of the Primal Ambush Frenzy Pack under product code JPG84 as a repaint, alongside the new Bagaceratops, Magnosaurus and Thescelosaurus. A repaint reuses the existing Mattel Minqaria sculpt with a new colour scheme, so the shape of the figure should be familiar while the paint will be different. No packaging or figure images have appeared yet, so the new colours are still unknown. We will update this page as soon as pictures are released.

🔬 Why This Species Is Worth Knowing

Minqaria is a duck-billed dinosaur that should not have been in Africa at all. In the Late Cretaceous, Africa was an island continent cut off by sea, and duckbills had evolved far away in the northern hemisphere. Yet Minqaria and its relative Ajnabia turned up in Morocco, and their closest cousins lived in Europe. The best explanation is that their ancestors crossed open water, by swimming or by rafting on floating vegetation. Minqaria was only named in 2024, which makes it one of the newest dinosaurs ever to become a toy.

Features & Articulation

✓ Frenzy Pack assortment✓ Product code JPG84✓ Repaint of the existing sculpt? New colours — to be confirmed

Frenzy Pack is the basic assortment in Primal Ambush. In the previous line, Frenzy Pack figures were smaller dinosaurs with simple articulation, typically a moving jaw, legs and tail, and no electronics or button-activated feature. As a repaint, this Minqaria should move in the same way as the earlier release of the sculpt, but we will test every joint on the new figure and add the results here.

Minqaria ships in the first wave of the Frenzy Pack alongside Bagaceratops, Magnosaurus and Thescelosaurus. Mattel has not published measurements for this release, so we will add the length and height once we have the figure in hand.

Early Verdict — One to Watch?

That depends on whether you already own one. If you missed the first Minqaria, this is a second chance at one of the most unusual hadrosaurs in the Mattel range. If you have it, the appeal will come down entirely to the new colour scheme, and that has not been shown yet. Repaints can be the highlight of a wave or an easy skip, so it is worth waiting for pictures. This is not a review, and we will give a proper verdict once we have the figure.

About the Minqaria

Minqaria bata was a small lambeosaurine hadrosaur, a crested duck-billed dinosaur, from the very end of the Cretaceous in Morocco, about 67 to 66 million years ago. Its fossils come from the phosphate mines of the Ouled Abdoun Basin, rocks laid down in a shallow sea. It was named in 2024 by a team led by the palaeontologist Nicholas Longrich. The genus name comes from the Arabic for “beak” and the species name from the Arabic for “duck”.

It was tiny by duckbill standards, around 3.5 metres long and perhaps 250 kilograms, roughly the size of a pony. It is known from part of a skull, including the upper jaw and braincase, and the shape of its jaws and teeth shows that it fed differently from Ajnabia, the other small duckbill found in the same rocks.

Minqaria belonged to a group of lambeosaurines otherwise known from Spain and France. Finding several different members of that group in Morocco suggests that duckbills did not just reach Africa once but, having arrived, spread out and diversified there in the last few million years before the asteroid impact.
