“If Spiclypeus was the medieval knight, Euoplocephalus was the armored tank of the Late Cretaceous.“
– Alan Grant
Euoplocephalus a large herbivorous ankylosaurid dinosaur that lived living during the Late Cretaceous period around 76 to 70 million years ago at the territory of Canada.
As its name (which comes from Greek for “well armoured head”) suggests, Euoplocephalus were heavily armed. It had a tank-like body covered in osteoderms, a.k.a. bony armor plates. It rocked a lot of shoulder spikes and fused bony scutes all along the back and tail, which ended in a tail club.
The size of the Euoplocephalus was quite respectable with length of about 5.5 – 6 meters (18 – 20 feet), and height of 1.5 meters (5 feet) at the hips.
The suggested weight for this compact tank of a dinosaur was expected to be around 2,000 – 2,500 kg (4,400 – 5,500 lbs).
The Euoplocephalus must have been a challenging dinner for even the most feared theropods at the time. The tail of the Euplocephalus appears to have been quite flexible all to the ending club which must have allowed it to swing it towards its enemies with extreme power.
