“Come at me, bro. See what happens.“
– Edmontonia probably
Edmontonia is a genus of panoplosaurin nodosaurid dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period. Belonging to the family Nodosauridae, a group within the larger clade Ankylosauria, it was named after the Edmonton Formation—now known as the Horseshoe Canyon Formation in Canada—where its fossils were first discovered.
Edmontonia was a heavily built, wide-bodied dinosaur with a tank-like appearance. Its body was quite heavily covered in bony armor plates (osteoderms) embedded in its skin. From all sides it was covered in spikes so attacking this dinosaur would have been quite a painful experience.
The size of the Edmontonia was not so impressive as the Ankylosaurus with its length of about 6 – 7 meters (20 – 23 feet) and height of around 1.5 – 2 meters (5 – 6.5 feet) and estimated weight of about 3,000 – 3,500 kg (6,600 – 7,700 lbs)
There is no tail club like the one the ankylosaurs have, and instead, it relied on passive armor and spikes for defense.
