Vespersaurus is a genuine first for Mattel — a species that has never appeared in any of their toy lines before. It arrives covered in a thick, sculpted feather coat, blocked out in deep brownish-red against pale tan, with a bright red face that makes it look permanently furious.

This is a fantastic addition to the Mattel lineup: an awesome-looking dinosaur that has never been released in any of their toy lines before. For a small figure in the cheapest tier of the Survival assortment, getting a brand new species is more than you would normally expect.

What Is Frenzy Pack?
Frenzy Pack is one of several sub-lines inside Jurassic World Survival, alongside Wild Roar, Strike Attack, Gigantic Thrashers and the rest. It is the smaller, simpler tier — no sounds, no lights, no spring-loaded gimmick — so the sculpt and the paint carry the whole figure. That makes it a good home for an obscure species like this one.

Paint & Colour Scheme
The figure uses strong two-tone colour blocking. The main feathered body, the legs and the head are a deep brownish-red, sharply contrasted by a light tan or pale beige that covers the entire tail and the underbelly and runs up to the lower jaw. It is a clean split rather than a blended fade, which suits the chunky feather sculpt.
The Sculpt
Shape and proportions
The overall build is close to Mattel’s Gallimimus — light, long-legged and bird-like — but far more fearsome. Where the Gallimimus reads as prey, this one reads as a small predator, and the proportions are right for the real animal, which was a compact noasaurid rather than a big theropod.
The feather coat
The entire body — particularly the back, the neck and the arms — is covered in a thick, sculpted, feather-like coat, with especially well detailed feathering at the back, along the tail and down the legs. The heavy plumage gives it a rugged, resilient look that fits the Survival aesthetic, and to my eye it reads far more realistic than the traditional scaly theropods in the same assortment.

As part of the Frenzy Pack series, this figure gets the signature articulated jaw plus hind and front limbs. It can be posed in a closed-mouth stance or opened wide for a more aggressive display. That is the whole feature set — there is no spring mechanism, sound or light.
Verdict: Should You Buy It?
Yes — and especially if you care about species you cannot get anywhere else. Vespersaurus has never been made by Mattel before, the feather sculpt is detailed and looks far better than the scaly theropods beside it on the peg, and the two-tone blocking with the bright red face gives it genuine character for a budget figure. Like every Frenzy Pack release it is articulation only, so do not expect a trick. As a small, distinctive display piece it is one of the easier recommendations in the line.

About the Vespersaurus
Vespersaurus paranaensis is a small noasaurid theropod from the Late Cretaceous of Brazil, described in 2019 from fossils found at Cruzeiro do Oeste in the state of Paraná. The name combines Latin vesper, evening or west, with saurus, lizard — a nod to the Cruzeiro do Oeste (“Cross of the West”) site where the bones were dug up.
Its most unusual feature is its foot. Vespersaurus was functionally single-toed: the middle toe carried almost all of its weight, while the toes either side were held clear of the ground. No other non-avian dinosaur is known to have walked quite like this, and it is generally read as an adaptation to running on the loose sand of the desert it lived in — the Caiuá Group preserves an ancient dune field.
It was small, roughly a metre and a half long, and a carnivore, with blade-like teeth for a body of that size. As a noasaurid it belongs to the same broad group as Masiakasaurus rather than to the raptors, despite the superficially similar build. Feathering is not directly preserved for Vespersaurus, but its relatives and the wider theropod family tree make the Mattel figure’s heavy coat a reasonable interpretation rather than a pure invention.
