“If you were a Miocene mammal, swimming across a river might’ve been a death sentence. One second, you’re cooling off…
…next second, you’re inside a prehistoric meat blender.”
— Martin Krebs
Purussaurus is an extinct genus of a giant caiman that lived during the Miocene Epoch, around 8 to 5 million years ago in what is now South America.
It is important to note that this is not exactly a dinosaur as it lived millions of years after the last real dinosaurs roamed the earth.
The size of the Purussaurus was quite outstanding with its skull larger than then skull of a Tyrannosaurus Rex and the rest of the measurements were terrifying as well. It is estimated to have been with a length of 10 – 12.5 meters (33 – 41 feet) and weighted about 5,000 – 8,000 kg (11,000 – 17,600 lbs). So you can imagine it was big as a bus and had a lot of teeth.
It is believed that the Purussaurus used to ambush animals from the water, just like the modern crocodiles do — only instead of dragging down an antelope or a curious monkey, it may have ripped apart a hippo-sized mammal.
