“Oh god no. Please, do not name this fossil after me. Pick a famous general or something.”
— Javier Ochoa probably
Guemesia ochoai was a relatively small carnivorous abelisaurid theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago.
It is relatively recently identified species but it is quite interesting regarding the diversity and distribution of abelisaurids in South America.
As the rest members of the abelisaurids family the Guemesia ochoai had strong, powerful jaws and sharp teeth designed for gripping and tearing flesh.
Similar to other members of the family like the Carnotaurus, Guemesia ochoai likely had small, vestigial forearms and relied on its jaws and strong hind limbs for hunting or feeding.
Fun fact is that the names comes from two important figures. General Martín Miguel de Güemes who was a famous Argentinian general and Javier Ochoa, the museum technician who made the discovery of the fossil.
