Quarry Neighbours: Gastonia and Utahraptor

Gastonia was dug up alongside one of the most dangerous predators of its time.

The Gaston Quarry in Utah produced both Gastonia and Utahraptor. With a predator that size around, Gastonia needed every spike it had.

It is easy to imagine a Utahraptor circling a crouched Gastonia, looking for a gap in its armour.

About Gastonia

Gastonia was named in 1998 by James Kirkland from fossils found in the Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah. It honours Robert Gaston, who found the quarry.

It lived in the Early Cretaceous, about 125 million years ago. It was about 5 to 6 m long.

Gastonia was a polacanthid, an armoured dinosaur related to the ankylosaurs. Instead of a tail club, it had sharp spikes and blades along its tail.
