“Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes the Therizinosaurus. And believe it or not, those huge claws you see? They actually helped to feed on vegetation. For real! But er… just do me one favor, OK? Don’t let it near my hair with those things!”

Isaac Clement

Beipiaosaurus is one of the earliest and most primitive therizinosaurs, a strange group of theropod dinosaurs (normally meat-eaters) that evolved into plant-eaters with. It is considered for one of the more intriguing and important feathered dinosaurs discovered in China, particularly for the evolution of feathers and therizinosaurs.

The name comes from the location where it was discovered “Beipiao lizard” ( Beipiao city in Liaoning, China). It roamed in what is nowadays China during the Early Cretaceous or somewhere about 125 million years ago.

The size of the Beipiaosaurus was not as impressive a its famous relative the Therizinosaurus as it was about 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) in length and weighed between 27–30 kg (60–66 lbs).

Walked bipedally and had a large, wide belly typical of plant-eating animals. Had long and powerful arms ending with giant claws which were likely used for defense, foraging, or pulling down vegetation. The beipiaosaurus had small, leaf-shaped teeth and a likely keratinous beak, adapted for eating plants.
