“Your arms are… pretty much vestigial at this point! Ha!” — Darius Bowman
Carnotaurus (“meat-eating bull”), was a large bipedal carnivore dinosaur that lived approximately 72-69 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. It was first discovered in Argentina and well-studied from several well-preserved skeletons, including some with soft tissue impressions. Carnotaurus was a fast runner and had powerful legs, making it a formidable predator. Its size was estimated to be around 26-30 feet long and weighed somewhere around 1.5 tons.
The most distinctive feature of the Carnotaurus was the two horns above its eyes, which were relatively short compared to other horned dinosaurs, but still relatively prominent. The purpose of these horns is not well understood, but they may have been used for display or for combat with other members of its species.
Its skeletal structure was heavily built, with a large, deep torso and powerful hind limbs, which suggest that it was a highly agile runner with good balance because of its long tail.
The front limbs of the Carnotaurus were relatively short compared to its body size, and much smaller than its powerful hind limbs. The forelimbs had three fingers, each with a sharp claw, but they were not as heavily muscled as the hind limbs and were probably used more for balance and grasping prey, rather than for running or hunting.
In addition, the skull of the Carnotaurus had a short, deep snout, which was filled with sharp teeth, making it a formidable predator.
The Carnotaurus has been featured in several popular media depictions of dinosaurs, including in the movie “Jurassic Park II: The Lost World”, the Camp Cretaceous Netflix series and the video game “Ark: Survival Evolved.” These portrayals have helped to increase its visibility and popularity among the general public.
