Styxosaurus

“OK, here we have the Kronosaurus. A predator that once ruled the seas of Colombia and Australia. Now get this: the marine reptile was named after the titan Kronos, a legendary ruler of Greek mythology’s golden age. Pretty cool, right?”

Isaaac Clement

The long-necked Styxosaurus comes from the family of the Elasmosaurus and the Plesiosaurus (hence the long neck) which lived during the Late Cretaceous period, somewhere 85 to 70 million years ago.

The Styxosaurus is known for its extremely long neck, which had up to 60 vertebrae. In size it was quite large, with estimates suggesting it could reach lengths of up to 11 meters (36 feet).

Despite its long neck, Styxosaurus had a relatively small head. Its body was streamlined and suited for living underwater. Like other plesiosaurs, it had four flippers, which it used to swim through the water, similar to how sea turtles move.

Styxosaurus lived in the shallow inland seas that covered much of what is now North America during the Late Cretaceous. It was a marine predator, feeding on fish, squid, and other marine organisms.

Its long neck may have been used to sneak up on prey or to quickly strike from a distance, but this is still debated among paleontologists.
