“Mmm there’s certainly something special about this one… a ‘je ne sais quoi’. It’s a Pyroraptor. Had it not been for a forest fire sweeping through Southern France, our little feathered friend may have gone undiscovered… and my life insurance would be just that little bit cheaper!”
– Cabot Finch
Utahraptor is a genus of the large raptor theropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, about 126 million years ago, in what is now Utah, USA. It is one of the largest and most fearsome members of the raptor family, known for its large sickle-shaped claw and agile, predatory nature.
Utahraptor is the largest known dromaeosaurid, estimated to be about 5 to 7 meters (16 to 23 feet) in length and weighing around 500 to 1,000 kilograms (1,100 to 2,200 pounds). It stood roughly 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 feet) tall at the hips.
The origin of the dromaeosaurs has long been debated. A number of prominent scientists believe they originated in North America, possibly the area that was adjacent to Europe in the very Early Cretaceous.
It is believed that Utahraptor was an apex predator of its ecosystem, possibly hunting in packs, though this behavior is speculative. It likely used its sickle claw in hunting, either by ambushing prey or slashing at it during high-speed attacks.
