“Simply amazing! This little guy died 97 million years ago and since then we never found another one. This is history guys! This is history!” — Darius Bowman
Jakapil is one of the most recently discovered type of small armoured dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous period.
It was small dinosaur, with an average size of around 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) in length, and would have weighed approximately 4-7 kg (just about 10-15 pounds), comparable to a large domestic cat or a small dog. It had leaf-shaped teeth very similar to those of early thyreophorans, suggesting it was an herbivore.
The dinosaur had bony armour plates (osteoderms) along its neck, back, and tail, which is very typical to the group of thyreophorans. This armour would have provided protection from predators.
Unlike larger armored dinosaurs such as ankylosaurs, Jakapil was likely bipedal, meaning it walked on two legs.
Jakapil belongs to a unique evolutionary lineage of armored dinosaurs. While other thyreophorans like stegosaurs and ankylosaurs were quadrupedal, Jakapil’s bipedal stance and other skeletal features set it apart, leading researchers to place it in a distinct group within thyreophorans.
