Beipiaosaurus Jurassic World Rebirth Frenzy Pack Review

Toy Line: Frenzy Pack

Year: 2025

The Beipiaosaurus is one of the most genuinely unusual species choices Mattel has made in the Rebirth Frenzy line. A feathered therizinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, it arrives with a reddish body tone, brownish facial detail, and an extraordinary mixture of feathering and scaled skin textures across almost every zone of the figure. The sculpt is crisp and vibrant throughout. The paint apps, true to this wave's pattern, are the weakest part. But the species itself is exciting, the texture work is unlike anything else in the current line, and this is one addition most collectors will not have had the option to own before.

Species Choice: Why This One Matters

Beipiaosaurus inexpectus was described in 1999 from the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, China, and at the time of its discovery it was one of the largest known feathered dinosaurs in the fossil record. As a therizinosaur, it belongs to a group of coelurosaurs that evolved away from the predatory lifestyle of their ancestors toward herbivory or omnivory, developing broad bodies, long necks, and the large hand claws that define the family.

Beipiaosaurus preserves evidence of two distinct types of feather structures: the typical filamentous protofeathers seen on many feathered dinosaurs, and a second set of broader, stiffer, elongated feathers, which are unique among non-avian dinosaurs and may have functioned in display.

Mattel’s interpretation takes creative liberties, as it typically does, but the inclusion of visible feathering across multiple zones of the figure reflects the actual fossil record in spirit if not in precise form.

About the Toy

1. Sculpt and painting

The texture work on the Beipiaosaurus is the most varied and interesting thing about it. Mattel has used multiple distinct skin and feather treatments across different zones of the body, and the interplay between feathered and scaled regions gives the figure a look that nothing else in the current Frenzy lineup quite replicates.

The head sculpt itself is well executed. A small crest-like feature rises at the top of the skull. The beak is cleanly sculpted with reasonable surface texture. The nostrils are defined. There is a hint of feathering picking up along the lower jaw as it leads back toward the neck, which is a subtle but effective transitional detail. The eye is set correctly in the socket and the green paint with black pupil has a light satin sheen.

This wave of Rebirth Frenzy packs has been the most restrained when it comes to paint application that Mattel has produced in some time, and the Beipiaosaurus is no exception. The color work is sparse, though what exists is applied with reasonable intent. The reddish primary body tone dominates most of the figure. The teeth on the upper jaw are painted a yellowish tone; the lower jaw teeth are white, an inconsistency that is somewhat noticeable up close.

2. Action Feature & Articulation

Standard frenzy pack articulation throughout. The neck movement is limited rather than generous, which is consistent with the format. The jaw works cleanly once open, though the closed-mouth gap is worth being aware of before purchase.

  • Lower jaw (articulated)
  • Neck (up and down, limited range)
  • Arms (forward and back)
  • Legs (forward and back)
  • Tail swivel

Verdict Should I buy it?

Yes, with realistic expectations. The Beipiaosaurus is not the strongest figure of this Rebirth Frenzy wave on paint, but it is arguably the most interesting. The species is a genuinely rare choice, the feather and scale texture variation is the most complex and unusual treatment in the current Frenzy lineup, and the overall sculpt quality is crisp and vibrant throughout. The lower jaw gap when closed and the sparse paint work are the only meaningful criticisms. Collectors who repaint will find this an exceptional base to work from. Those collecting purely for shelf display should know what they are getting: a beautifully sculpted figure whose paint apps leave significant room on the table.

3. About the Beipiaosaurus

Beipiaosaurus inexpectus was formally described in 1999 by Xu Xing, Tang Zhilu, and Wang Xiaolin from specimens recovered in the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, China. The species name inexpectus means “unexpected,” a reference to the surprise its anatomy caused in the scientific community. Beipiaosaurus lived during the Early Cretaceous, approximately 127 to 121 million years ago, alongside many other feathered dinosaurs preserved in the exceptional Liaoning fossil beds.

Beipiaosaurus was a therizinosaur, part of a clade of herbivorous or omnivorous maniraptorans characterized by long necks, broad torsos, small heads, and distinctive elongated hand claws. At an estimated length of around 2.2 metres (7.2 ft), Beipiaosaurus was considerably smaller than the famous Therizinosaurus but represented one of the largest dinosaurs known to have preserved evidence of feathering at the time of its discovery. Later analysis confirmed that it bore two types of feathers: typical filamentous protofeathers similar to those found on other feathered coelurosaurs, and a second type of elongated broad feathers, broader and stiffer than the filamentous coat, which are unique among non-avian dinosaurs and were likely used in visual display.

How do you pronounce Beipiaosaurus?

The most widely accepted pronunciation is bay-PYOW-sore-us. The name comes from Beipiao, a city in Liaoning Province, China, close to where the fossils were found.

Is the Beipiaosaurus a therizinosaur?

Yes. Beipiaosaurus is classified within Therizinosauria, a group of herbivorous or omnivorous maniraptorans. Therizinosaurs are characterized by their long necks, broad bodies, and large hand claws, and are distant relatives of birds despite their unusual body plan. Beipiaosaurus is one of the most well-preserved and studied members of the group thanks to the exceptional fossil conditions in the Liaoning Province beds.

Did the real Beipiaosaurus have feathers?

Yes. Beipiaosaurus is one of the most important feathered dinosaur discoveries because it preserves evidence of two distinct types of feather structures: the typical filamentous protofeathers seen on other feathered coelurosaurs, and a second type called elongated broad feathers (EBFs), which are unique to Beipiaosaurus among non-avian dinosaurs. The EBFs are thought to have functioned in display rather than insulation or flight.

What is the action feature on the Beipiaosaurus Frenzy Pack?

There is no dedicated action feature. The Beipiaosaurus has an articulated lower jaw and limited neck movement, which is standard for the Frenzy Pack format. The jaw opens and closes cleanly once open, though there is a visible gap in the lower jaw when the mouth is held shut that is worth being aware of.

Is the Beipiaosaurus Frenzy Pack worth buying?

For collectors of obscure and scientifically interesting species, absolutely. It is the first Mattel Beipiaosaurus ever produced, the sculpt is well detailed with genuinely unusual feather and scale texture variation, and it is one of the most distinctive-looking figures in the current Frenzy lineup. Those expecting strong paint work should temper expectations, as this wave has been consistently sparse on paint apps throughout.
