Piatnitzkysaurus Danger Pack
Piatnitzkysaurus joined Jurassic World Dino Trackers in Danger Pack wave 2, alongside Tupandactylus and Xuanhanosaurus. It is one of the oldest predators in the whole Dino Trackers line, a Jurassic hunter from Patagonia that lived long before Tyrannosaurus. Mattel’s figure is a dark teal theropod with a bright orange crest, a red face mask and spiky quills. Deep Time: How Old Is Piatnitzkysaurus?
Most Dino Trackers figures are Cretaceous animals. Piatnitzkysaurus is much older. Here is where it sits on the timeline, in millions of years ago.
More time separates Piatnitzkysaurus from Tyrannosaurus rex, about 110 million years, than separates T. rex from us.
What Is Danger Pack?
Danger Pack is the smaller, battery-free assortment of Mattel’s Dino Trackers line, built around animals that lived, hunted or moved in groups. The figures have movable joints and a hidden tracking code for the app, but no sounds or motorised attacks. Wave 2 brought Piatnitzkysaurus, Tupandactylus and Xuanhanosaurus.
Danger Pack has continued in later Jurassic World lines, and it is the easiest way to build a big Dino Trackers collection on a budget.
Paint and Colours
A bold, jungle-coloured scheme. The body is a deep teal, with lime-olive stripes and spikes running along the back. The head is the showpiece: a bright orange crest on top, a red mask around the eye and a pale cream lower jaw and throat that frames the open, toothy mouth.
Sculpt and Detail
Head and crest
The head has a large, wide-open mouth full of teeth, a fan-shaped crest on top and a frill of spiky quills down the neck. The crest and quills are Mattel’s styling: the real Piatnitzkysaurus is not known to have had a big head crest.
Body and legs
The body is lean, with strong three-fingered arms held forward and long legs with clawed feet. A row of short spikes runs down the back to the hips, and the long tail balances the figure in a forward-leaning stance.

Like every Danger Pack figure, Piatnitzkysaurus keeps things simple: movable joints for posing and play, no electronics, and a tracking code hidden on the figure for the app, on a tag in the middle of the back. Its open jaws and bright crest make it one of the fiercest-looking figures in the range.
Size and Specs
Sold in the HLN49 Danger Pack assortment, for ages 4 and up. Its fellow wave 2 predator, Xuanhanosaurus, is another Jurassic hunter, so the two make a good pair.
Is It Worth Buying?
Piatnitzkysaurus is a great pick for collectors who like rare species and for kids who want a fierce, colourful predator without batteries. The teal, orange and red paint really stands out, and the open-mouthed head looks great in play fights. Just know that the crest is Mattel’s styling rather than science.
It is mostly found second hand now.

About Piatnitzkysaurus
Piatnitzkysaurus floresi was described by Argentine palaeontologist José Bonaparte in 1979, from two partial skeletons collected near Cerro Cóndor in Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. The genus honours geologist Alejandro Piatnitzky (1879 to 1959), and the species name honours a second geologist, Miguel Alejandro Flores.
It comes from the Cañadón Asfalto Formation, an ancient lake basin, and lived in the Jurassic. The rocks were long dated to about 166 million years ago, but newer dating places them closer to 180 to 175 million years ago. It was roughly 4.3 to 6 m long and a few hundred kilograms.
It is the most completely known Jurassic predatory dinosaur from the Southern Hemisphere, and an early member of the megalosauroids, the group that later included Megalosaurus and Spinosaurus.
